One of the easiest ways for photographers to improve their images has two components - Slow Down And Get Closer, Get Closer, Get Closer. Far too often we are in our normal hurry up mode and we simply do not SEE the details and beauty of our surroundings. This is especially true in familiar environments; our back yard, the park, a nature walk. We "look" for some grandiose vista but never actually "see" it when the opportunity presents itself. And then we hurry the shot resulting in poor composition, and poor execution. On top of this, we do not look close enough... our shots have no singular subject that stands out and demands the attention of the viewer. We include too much and do not emphasize what is important.

Our nature walk today will concentrate on "slowing down and actually seeing" and then "getting closer". We will also talk about all those technical things like depth of field, camera modes, apertures and shutter speeds, using fill flash outside, using tripods and a few other goodies.

Creative Digital Control: Photoshop Classroom Seminar

This is a 5 week classroom session and requires internet access and a Photo editing program like Photoshop Elements installed on your home computer

What can we do to our pictures after they are shot. The goals of this seminar is to introduce the student to various creative techniques, and post shooting effects that can be applied to your images. We will discuss and demonstrate making color adjustments, density adjustments, fixing common shooting problems like red eye, creating composites, adding words, creating drop shadows, adding boarders. Archival printing using your inkjet printer, re-sizing images, cropping for effect will also be discussed. This is a 5 week seminar and will be a combination of small group and individual instruction, computer demonstration of techniques and personalized instruction with students at home (via phone and E-mail). Classes will be at my studio located at 425 East Lancaster Avenue, Shillington. Students should have Adobe Photoshop Elements or equivalent installed on their home computer. Laptop are welcome in class but not necessary. Pre enrollment and deposit is required. Cost per student for 5 weeks $145.00

This will not be prepared food dishes, but rather food and still life shots. We will concentrate on the less is more principal, both with lighting the still life and composition. Most demos will use one light and easy to find props. We will concentrate on using easily accesssable and inexpensive solutions to lighting and use everyday around the house items to create stunning sill life images.

Photoshop Effects: Beyond the presets

B&W Effects, Sepia Effects, Tri Tone Effects, Sharpening, Creative Filters, Painting Effects

This is designed to introduce the student to using these techniques in ways BETTER than the preset functions Photoshop offers. I NEVER use the presets for converting to B&W or Sepia for example. I have 3 or more ways to sharpen an image and often sharpen part and soften part of the same image. Using the creative filters on a layer and adding the effect to part of the image. Combining multiple exposures into one shot.

AND Painting Effects ...

This is using an existing photograph and brushes that are not part of the Photoshop pallet to paint a new image... using history states and layers. Many of my flowers shots and landscapes were done with these techniques. Go on my web site under fine art for some examples of painting techniques. We will also demonstrate painting effects on a portrait.

This is a premier location in NE Pa for a multitude of pristine water falls and natural streams. The photo opportunities are virtually endless along many trails that will take us through the woods and along the various waterfalls. This trip will require hiking, uphill travel, and wet rocky terrain. Currently I am considering making this a 2 day excursion because the travel distance to the State Park is around 2.5 - 3 hours AND there is just so much to see once we arrive. SO, please E-mail me with your current interest, one or 2 days option and I can investigate the overnight opportunities. Bring your spouse free...one registration will cover both. This is not the best choice for small children, teenagers will be able to negotiate the rocky terrain with out difficulty.
